Full Job Description

Hi! We are AMBOSS and we are looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our team, and shape the future of medical education with us!

About AMBOSS

AMBOSS is a dynamic learning and clinical decision support tool committed to empowering medical professionals globally to deliver optimal care. Since our inception in 2012, we've harnessed cutting-edge technology to transform the way physicians acquire and apply scientific knowledge. Each AMBOSSian is passionate about being the champion of clinicians today - this motivates and unites us each day towards success. And what does success look like? When a clinician or med student tells us, “AMBOSS makes practicing medicine easier and enjoyable. I love what I do, and a big part is because of AMBOSS.”

Why can this position be exciting for you?

  • High Impact: Your work will directly shape the work of a large internal editorial team, and the content delivery systems are (invisibly) used by tens of thousands of medical students and professionals worldwide, directly influencing how they learn and practice medicine.

  • Meaningful Mission: AMBOSS is dedicated to improving medical education and clinical decision-making. Your contributions will help shape the future of medical learning.

  • Growth & Collaboration: You will be part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team where innovation, learning, and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do.

You will:

  • Dive deep into a large domain, a multi-layered tech system, and become an expert in both.

  • Turn a new and unpolished complex CMS and a nascent content processing pipeline into a platform

    • that other internal teams can comfortably self-serve

    • that editors are happy and productive to work in

    • that enables AMBOSS’ business needs

    • and that serves AMBOSS’ end-users

  • Figure out complicated data structure problems (nested trees of multi-dimensional content)

  • Automate manual editorial workflows, with solutions that leverage AI when sensible, also coaching medical editors in using technical tooling

  • Develop testable prototypes

  • Contribute to the team’s product roadmap, vision, and strategy development

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, product managers, medical editors, and designers

  • Contribute to our engineering culture by sharing your knowledge and learnings

  • Participate in team workshops in AMBOSS offices (able to travel every 2 months or so)

You bring:

  • Strong fundamental web development skills

  • You’re home in the Javascript ecosystem, are comfortable with Typescript, have worked with popular single page application frameworks (React.js preferred), and can work on browser JS as well as Node.js server side code

  • You can understand and debug complex system behaviors, dive deep into nitty gritty implementation details, but also pull yourself out of non-productive rabbit-holes.

  • You’re quick-witted and can keep a large domain with many behaviors in your head.

  • Bonus: Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Docker, AWS, Kubernetes, or any further DevOps related skills.

You enjoy:

  • Taking a product-minded approach and deeply caring about the impact of your work, contributing to medical education and healthcare advancement

  • You enjoy when specifications are not set in stone by others. You don’t mind coordinating with stakeholders, to co-build exact acceptance criteria on the fly. You are comfortable making small product and technical decisions yourself, but also know when to pull in the team to raise issues and make consequential decisions together.

  • For you, “done is better than perfect”. You’re pragmatic and not a stickler for perfect systems or perfect code. You can accept technical debt if that’s the trade-off the organization prefers in a given situation.

  • Working in a hybrid environment, where half of the team is remote. You don’t mind not seeing colleagues in the office every day.

  • Collaborating across diverse teams and disciplines

  • Contributing to open source projects (e.g. Payload) instead of our own source code when that’s the right way to improve our CMS.
