Full Job Description

Hello, we are AMBOSS and we are looking for a Data Engineer Team Lead or a Lead Data Engineer to join our team!

About AMBOSS

AMBOSS is a learning and clinical decision support tool striving to empower physicians across the globe to provide the best possible care. Our founders set out in 2011 to create a tool that they would have hoped to have as medical students and doctors. Since then we have grown to currently operate in 180 countries and have gained immense traction in Germany and the US. Currently, we are pursuing this mission with more than 500+ employees in our offices in Berlin, Cologne, New York, and Cagliari.

Why Data & Analytics at AMBOSS?

Join a high-trust, cross-functional team where data is the backbone of every product decision, experiment, and growth initiative. Working side-by-side with Product, Engineering, Commercial, and Medical teams, you’ll help turn a modern, cloud-native stack—BigQuery, dbt, Looker, Airflow, Python, Mixpanel—into actionable insights and scalable platforms. Your work will directly advance our mission to enable doctors to provide the best possible care.

The Role

As Data Platform Lead/ Lead Data Engineer you will be managing a small, senior data-engineering squad and the domain expert steering our end-to-end platform strategy. You’ll own the roadmap, architecture, and delivery of a reliable, self-service data platform that lets analysts, scientists, and product teams move fast and trust their numbers—ultimately powering clinical outcomes for users in 180 countries.

What You’ll Do

  • Set the course. Own and sequence the data-platform roadmap—warehouse evolution, cost-to-serve optimization, and more.

  • Own the Single Source of Truth for the entire company, ensuring stakeholders in different departments and functions speak the same “data language” and use the same metrics.

  • Build the team. Hire, mentor, and grow 3-5 Data Engineers; run clear goal-setting and feedback cycles.

  • Architect for scale. Design and review core components (batch & real-time pipelines, modeling layers, governance, observability, CI/CD).

  • Deliver the big moves. Lead large migrations or net-new platform initiatives.

  • Raise the bar. Codify engineering standards for code quality, testing, reliability, and incident response.

  • Partner & influence. Work closely with Analytics, Product, and Infrastructure to balance speed with tech debt and evangelize best practices.

  • Stay tool-agnostic. Evaluate, pilot, and—when needed—retire technologies based on evidence, not hype.

You’re Good At

  • Seeing the platform-level picture—designing for security, self-service, and future scale, not one-off pipelines.

  • Turning ambitious visions into shipped, production-grade systems on schedule.

  • Coaching and unblocking engineers & analysts through clear expectations and constructive feedback.

  • Translating technical trade-offs into concise narratives executives and stakeholders can act on.

  • Driving change in fast-moving, cross-functional environments.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5 + years in data-engineering / platform roles, including 2 + years leading a team, or E2E projects, from planning to deployment.

  • Deep SQL and strong Python; production experience with Airflow, DBT, or comparable frameworks.

  • Hands-on expertise with cloud warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake) and at least one major cloud provider (AWS or GCP).

  • Proven CI/CD and IaC chops (GitHub Actions, Terraform, etc.).

  • Solid grasp of data modeling, governance, and observability patterns.

  • Excellent English communication; German a plus.

  • Bonus: exposure to AI/LLM workloads or vector databases.
