About the Role:
Hims & Hers is on a mission to empower people to live healthier lives. Our Patient team plays a critical role in achieving this by building services for the Patient Health Data Platform, enabling both patient and provider experiences.
As a Software Engineer II, you will design and implement moderately complex, scalable solutions across our back-end systems, working independently on well-scoped projects. You will contribute to design decisions within your squad, deepen your testing and operational practices, and help raise the quality bar through thoughtful code reviews and knowledge sharing.
You Will:
Design and build medium-complexity, scalable, and maintainable solutions that meet product requirements, keeping principles like SOLID and DRY in mind
Write clear, well-structured technical design documents that align your squad and guide implementation, incorporating feedback as designs evolve
Write modular, reusable, testable code, and ensure your squad's testing standards (unit, integration, end-to-end, and manual) are followed throughout development and delivery
Provide constructive feedback in code reviews, with consistent attention to conventions, functionality, and test coverage
Take ownership of technical debt by contributing fixes, proposing priorities, and balancing it against feature work
Participate in product discovery to assess feasibility, explore user needs, and help validate ideas with prototypes and experiments
Work with other engineers to ensure clean integration and communication across systems and services
Implement basic observability (logging, monitoring, and alerting) for the systems you develop, and identify and resolve minor performance or reliability issues
Break down medium-complexity projects into clear, actionable tasks and drive them from planning through delivery, seeking guidance when blocked
Analyze performance metrics and user feedback to identify and act on opportunities for improvement
Create and maintain technical documentation for the systems and processes you work on
Share knowledge with peers, suggest improvements to workflows and tools, and propose ideas for continuous improvement within your squad
Contribute to the hiring process by assisting with technical screens or interviews where appropriate, and help coach new hires or interns on fundamental technical skills
You Have:
Minimum 2+ years as a software engineer, shipping production code
Experience contributing to back-end distributed systems and services
Familiarity with microservice architectures
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
Experience building scalable web applications and services, preferably in the cloud
Working experience deploying and hosting front ends and microservices on Kubernetes and AWS
Experience with agile software development and delivery.
Experience with CI/CD processes, including automated unit and integration tests
Experience with relational databases, PostgreSQL preferred
Strong problem-solving skills and a growing ability to think critically about trade-offs in performance, cost, and complexity
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within a squad
Ability to take ownership of your work, adapt to ambiguity, and make steady progress with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications:
Healthcare tech, wearables, or connected device data experience
Proficiency in front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks (React, React Native, NextJS, GraphQL)
Experience with Node.js, Redis, or Kotlin
Web performance optimization experience
Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):
Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles
Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days
Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave
Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)
401k benefits with employer matching contribution
Offsite team retreats
We are committed to building a workforce that reflects diverse perspectives and prioritizes ethics, wellness, and a strong sense of belonging. If you're excited about this role, we encourage you to apply—even if you're not sure if your background or experience is a perfect match.
