Job Summary
We are looking for a full-stack software engineer with a strong backend focus to join our engineering team at Cairns Health. This role sits at the intersection of LLM-powered conversational AI, backend systems, cloud infrastructure, and modern web and mobile applications. While you will contribute across the stack, the core of this role is designing and building backend systems and LLM applications that power our AI-driven experiences. You will work on integrating and operating large language models, shaping conversational workflows, and ensuring these systems are reliable, performant, and production-ready. Front-end development using React and React Native supports these capabilities but is not the primary focus of the role.
This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys building real-world LLM applications, thinking deeply about system behavior in production, and taking ownership in a fast-moving startup environment.
Responsibilities
Write production-quality code daily, with an emphasis on backend systems and LLM-powered features.
Design, build, and evolve backend architectures that support conversational AI and health-focused LLM applications.
Develop, integrate, and maintain LLM applications, including conversational flows, orchestration logic, and AI-driven services.
Apply prompt engineering techniques to improve response quality, reliability, and safety.
Optimize LLM-backed systems for latency, concurrency, uptime, and cost efficiency.
Build and maintain APIs and microservices that power web, mobile, and device-level experiences.
Contribute to web and mobile applications using React and React Native, primarily to enable and integrate backend and AI functionality.
Collaborate closely with a team of high-performing engineers across product, infrastructure, and AI.
Gain exposure to adjacent areas such as radar data pipelines, embedded devices, AWS infrastructure, and Kubernetes-based deployments.
Qualifications and Job Requirements
3–5+ years of professional full-stack software engineering experience.
Strong backend engineering skills using Java (preferred) or Python.
Prior experience integrating LLMs or conversational AI via APIs (OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, etc.).
Experience with LLM application patterns, such as prompt iteration, conversation state, or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
Experience building and operating services on AWS.
Hands-on experience with microservices, REST APIs, and CI/CD pipelines.
Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes in cloud-native environments.
A hands-on, ownership-driven mindset and comfort working in a startup environment
