Quality Assurance Engineer – Test Automation

ABOUT THE ROLE & THE TEAM:

We’re looking for a burgeoning manual Quality Assurance Engineer who is ready to take it to the next level as an automation engineer. In this role, you’ll be a key partner to our developers, owning manual e2e test development and manual test execution across both frontend and backend services, aiding in the design of systems with testability baked in from day one. Additionally, as time allows, partnering with senior Test Engineers migrating the e2e manual test suite into our existing Playwright/Claude Code/BMAD test framework.

You will design the right manual e2e test strategy, document the tests, execute them, aid in automating them when assigned, aid in evolving our test framework, and push the quality bar higher with every release leveraging CI/CD in GitHub.

Our preferred stack includes the Playwright Test Framework with TypeScript and Claude Code/BMAD framework. We heavily value engineers who can have used one or more of Python / Java / JavaScript / TypeScript.

This role offers flexibility and is based in our Budapest office with a hybrid schedule of being in the office approximately three days per week.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• Own manual test coverage for critical components across our applications (backend services, APIs, and frontend UIs) and automation migration for the same, as time allows.

• Design, implement, and maintain robust end-to-end, integration, and API tests using modern tools and patterns, leveraging AI on LLMs.

• Participate in improving our test frameworks with a focus on maintainability, reliability, performance, and speed of execution.

• Partner with developers to embed testability into designs, guide on unit/integration testing best practices, and review test-related code generated by others leveraging AI.

• Aid in troubleshooting and debugging complex test failures leveraging AI,identifying whether issues are in the automation, the test data, the environment, or the product itself.

• Aid in automating fast-follow and regression testing, helping to ensure every new feature has solid automation behind it.

• Develop and manage test data strategies to support both manual exploratory testing and occasional automated testing when assigned and time allows.

• Contribute to non-functional testing, including performance and reliability tests for critical services and APIs when assigned and time allows.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, QA, and Engineering to drive a strong quality culture and clear release criteria.

WHAT YOU’ll BRING:

• 1+ years of experience as a Software Engineer in Test / QA Automation Engineer / Test Engineer with some exposure to automation.

• Hands-on experience with at least one modern test automation framework – e.g. Selenium, Playwright (strongly preferred), Cypress, Jest, Mocha, pytest, JUnit, Postman, etc.

• Good programming skills in at least one of:

  • JavaScript / TypeScript (preferred)

  • Python

  • Java

  • C#

  • etc.

• Experience participating in maintaining end-to-end and/or API automation in a CI/CD environment (AWS, Git/GitHub, pipelines, etc.).

• Solid understanding of web services, APIs, and event-driven systems and how to effectively test them using mocks and test data.

• Some exposure to the latest AI tools leveraging LLMs.

• Ability to communicate clearly and confidently with developers, QA, and product owners – including calling out quality risks and blocking issues when needed.

• A mindset of engineering quality, not just testing it: clean code, reusable components, and thoughtful design patterns in the test suites.

• Test management & traceability:

  • TestRails or X-Ray with Jira for test planning and traceability.

  • Confluence for documenting test strategies, test plans, and runbooks.

  • Coda for lightweight documentation, dashboards, or QA workflows.

• API testing expertise (e.g. Postman, REST Assured, Pact, or similar).

• Performance testing experience (k6 Preferred).

• Docker / containerization and working knowledge of cloud-native environments.

• Familiarity with microservices and event-based architectures.
