This is a fully remote position offering flexibility in work location. Full Job Description

Perplexity is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the team that owns the billing platform powering monetization across all Perplexity products. You'll set the technical direction, grow the team, and ensure the infrastructure that lets product teams launch new paid offerings, run pricing experiments, and convert users into paying customers is reliable, fast to build on, and scales with the business.

This is a high-leverage, hands-on leadership role on a small, critical team. The usage-based billing system this team owns is the foundation that monetizes Perplexity Computer and our agentic products — metering every action an AI agent takes in real time, enforcing credit budgets, and settling costs across entirely new interaction models. You'll lead across subscriptions, usage-based billing, and enterprise contracts to ensure every revenue path is reliable, observable, and easy to extend.

Tech Stack: Python | Go | Stripe | PostgreSQL | AWS | Docker

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers while maintaining high technical standards and a strong shipping cadence

  • Set the technical vision for the billing platform — define the right abstractions so product teams can ship new SKUs, pricing models, and monetization experiments with minimal friction

  • Own reliability for billing — establish tiered SLOs organized by customer impact, drive proactive monitoring, and ensure revenue-affecting issues are caught before customers notice

  • Partner with Finance, Data Science, Growth, Legal, and Security teams to ensure billing data is accurate, auditable, and compliant

  • Accelerate time-to-market for new monetization models — as agentic products evolve, the billing platform must keep pace

  • Drive expansion of payment method coverage and optimize authorization rates to improve conversion globally

  • Build a culture of operational excellence — internal tooling, runbooks, and on-call practices that empower the team and cross-functional partners

  • Recruit, mentor, and retain strong engineers in a competitive market

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering management experience with 8+ years total industry tenure

  • Direct experience leading a payments, billing, subscription, or monetization engineering team

  • Strong technical background — you can review system designs, debug production billing issues, and make informed build-vs-buy decisions

  • Deep familiarity with payment processors (Stripe, Square, etc.) — including subscriptions, invoicing, metering, disputes, and webhooks

  • Demonstrated experience of and appetite for building in-house billing solutions that rival leading best-in-class buy options

  • Track record of cross-functional collaboration with Finance, Legal, Support, and Growth stakeholders

  • Strong opinions on platform boundaries and API design — you know when to abstract and when to keep it simple

  • Experience operating high-reliability systems where correctness directly impacts revenue

Nice to Haves

  • Hands-on experience with the Stripe APIs and SDKs

  • Experience with usage-based or metered billing models

  • Experience scaling billing systems to millions of subscribers

  • Background in PLG/self-serve SaaS monetization and pricing experimentation

  • Experience with international payment methods and compliance requirements

  • Familiarity with Apple and Google Play in-app purchase billing
